Advancing Environmental Sustainability
Our passion for environmental stewardship has never been stronger
Leidos believes that a commitment to sustainability represents our responsibility as an ethical company and is critical to our business performance.
The greatest contribution Leidos makes to environmental stewardship comes through the work we do for our customers. For close to 50 years, we have been supporting our customers’ vital environmental and energy missions. We use this considerable expertise to inform our own internal efforts. In 2021 we set three new environmental sustainability goals to reduce our GHG emissions, increase our use of
renewable energy, and reduce waste to landfill in our facilities by 2030. The chart below details our progress toward these goals to date.
2022 Progress To Date
Focus Area |
2030 Target |
2022 Status |
Advance Environmental Sustainability |
Reduce GHG emissions by 25% by 2030 relative to a 2021 baseline |
Reduced scope 1&2 emissions by 7.5% |
Reduce waste to landfill by 50% in Leidos facilities by 2030 |
Data and resources continue to present challenges for this goal. We expect a full waste baseline in the third quarter of 2023 and have arranged forensic waste audits and program assessments to support our reduction efforts |
|
Increase renewable energy to 25% of total electricity use by 2030 |
Increased renewable energy utilization to 8.5% |
Our Management Approach
To meet our new goals, we will continue to reduce the size of our real estate portfolio and leverage energy efficiency and reduction initiatives, including the introduction of energy-saving equipment at our facilities and increased renewable energy purchases throughout our operations. Additional efforts include increasing our Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®)–certified spaces, educating and engaging our employees on energy and sustainability, improving equipment efficiency, reducing materials consumption and waste, and partnering with our suppliers to support circularity efforts.
Our global Environmental Health and Safety Policies guide our efforts and commitment to sustainability. Our enterprise strategy is supported by an increasing number of regional and business plans. This design provides flexibility for different parts of the Enterprise to comply with local regulations and unique customer requirements. For example, Leidos Innovations UK Ltd and Leidos Europe (Emersons Green site only) have published a Carbon Reduction Plan committing to achieving net zero by 2040. The plan is compliant with UK Government policies and goes beyond the requirement to achieve Net Zero by 2050.
Additionally, Leidos maintains an Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Management System to support the protection of our employees, our environment and our stakeholders, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The EH&S Management System consists of design, implementation and oversight processes to support consistent application across Leidos’ operations, inclusion of Leidos employees who work at customer-owned locations, and continuous progress towards a goal of zero accidents across our enterprise. Our EHS Management System has earned Leidos recognition as a leader in the field of occupational health and safety and undergoes rigorous internal scrutiny.
