AIMES™ Software
Commercial line of video processing products
AIMES is an advanced battle-proven geospatial data management solution designed to meet today’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) requirements.
Leidos delivers a Motion Imagery (MI) system that receives, processes, exploits, and archives full motion video (FMV) data. Built on a foundation of more than two decades of operational experience, AIMES is both a battle-proven MI solution and a critical enabler for intelligence enterprises. Leidos designed and implemented the AIMES software suite in close alignment with the Department of Defense (DoD) Motion Imagery Standards Board (MISB) for processing and distribution of MI data.
AIMES 2 is the latest generation MI processing, exploitation, and dissemination (PED) software suite that’s optimized for low bandwidth and high latency networks. AIMES is designed to manage mission tasks in the field or enterprise environment and provide customers with the ability to create rich interactions and highly tailored workflows to adapt to the changing needs of the user.
Applications
AIMES is the result of continuous internal research and development efforts to improve on our previous Motion Imagery solutions. As technology advances, the importance of MI management and analysis has continued to rise. Industries that can benefit from the AIMES product suite range from federal to state and local governments to a wide-variety of commercial and international markets.

Leidos AIMES PICTE captures MPEG transport streams transmitted over a network via unicast or multicast. It supports multiple video, audio, and metadata standards in real-time, offering the ability to condition and enhance streams before sending them to AIMES Exploit, AIMES Server, and 3rd party applications for wider dissemination. All feed setup, configuration, monitoring, and distribution is done via a convenient web-based user interface that is also accessible to the analysts through AIMES. It provides real-time full motion video (FMV) processing, aligning with the standards and profiles established by the Motion Imagery Standards Board (MISB), Motion Imagery Standards Profile (MISP) and Closed-Caption (CC) Metadata Processing, and video metric generation and distribution.
AIMES PICTE uses open architecture to easily allow information collected through the processing pipeline to be distributed on an enterprise scale or locally to third-party applications. AIMES PICTE can interact with third-party applications to add, configure, update, start, stop, and delete missions without the user interface to allow for automation and streamlining of setup. AIMES PICTE can support multiple feeds to handle a normal mission load and is easily scaled into a clustered or “hub” setup to account for extreme mission loads.

Leidos AIMES Server catalogs, indexes, and stores MISP compliant video slice files and NITF images from AIMES PICTE. AIMES Server uses Key Length Value (KLV) metadata in each slice to temporally synchronize the video with additional data available to the Server. The AIMES Server database is used to store, index, and correlate (both temporally and Geo-spatially) the data associated with:
- AIMES PICTE Active feed messages.
- Motion Imagery Standard Profile (MISP) compliant video slices.
- Video Motion Target Indicator (VMTI) data (MISB 0903 data).
- National Imagery Transmission Format Standard (NITFS) compliant still imagery files.
AIMES Server supports local storage, Network Attached Storage (NAS) and/or cloud storage (Amazon S3) and supports distributed database technologies (NoSQL). This allows customers to dynamically add and remove server nodes and storage when their system grows, experiences a failover condition, or connects/disconnects from a larger enterprise infrastructure. This flexible architecture enables customers to scale their cloud-based, virtualized, or bare metal infrastructures while maintaining the seamless “one-stop” discovery, and playback experience intelligence analysts need.

Leidos AIMES Exploit provides real-time screening and exploitation of imagery and data with the ability to query, retrieve, replay, and exploit complete archived missions. It provides the user with the ability to tag key events within live or archived video via text or audio callout messages and slant counts that are stored in the database.
Our latest version provides integration with STEPOne speech-to-text software and offers enhanced situational awareness tools to our customers with a new Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Viewer and Video Moving Target Indicator (VMTI) tool. Our new GEOINT Viewer enables third-party Web Map Service (WMS) support, allows users to see tracks, stare-point, and data layers that brings near-real-time (NRT) context to the mission. The VMTI tool parses and visualizes MISB 903 object detection data enabling Activity Based Intelligence (ABI) and Structured Observation Management (SOM) analysis and reporting paradigms.
Video Processing Pipeline (VPP), an all-new component of the AIMES suite, allows dynamic configuration of an end-to-end video processing flow that can be used to transform a stream before rebroadcast, system ingest, or within the end user’s client environment. This approach enables customers to configure their own custom video processing stream leveraging one or more algorithms to rapidly integrate new sensors or analytics. AIMES VPP adds super-resolution image scaling, video stabilization, transcoding, data conditioning, burn-in removal, and advanced analytical processing to AIMES Exploit. When combined with AIMES PICTE, customers can create and distribute special enhanced versions of their feeds across the entire enterprise.

Leidos AIMES Restream allows the user to simulate multiple live data feeds of MISP compliant motion imagery transmitted over standard networks via User Data Protocol (UDP)/Internet Protocol (IP) unicast or multicast. AIMES Restream also controls the rate of transmission to accurately mimic the original feed without overwhelming networking equipment or downstream consumers.

Leidos AIMES Reflector allows the user to redirect User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) data streams from one Internet Protocol (IP) address/port number to another IP/port number. AIMES Reflector supports incoming and outgoing unicast or multicast UDP streams and TCP client/server data streams. It gives users the ability to intercept and redirect data (including streaming video) on different local networks for consumption and can also provide the ability to cast between locations (by way of the TCP protocol).

FAQs

Leidos Inc. (formerly SAIC), built and fielded several generations of Full Motion Video (FMV) capable products with development of the first system beginning in 1999. The original FMV software products called VPC, included the Deployable Community Motion Imagery Library (DCMIL), Community Motion Imagery Library (CMIL), PICTE and MITools software products.
In 2008, Leidos recognized FMV Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED) operations and mission requirements demanded a completely new and dramatically more capable FMV PED architecture. Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission requirements had grown, new Multi-INT requirements were emerging, FMV exploitation technology had matured, and sensors expanded in both capability and performance. At this time, Leidos recognized the current set of software tools needed to be expanded to support emerging ISR mission needs. Leidos took the initiative to develop a completely new FMV PED software product line called AIMES.
AIMES was designed to be integrated with other PED systems, such as the United States Air Force Distributed Common Ground System (AF-DCGS) and United States Army Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS-A). AIMES was designed closely with user cooperation throughout the development process. It integrates the capabilities of our legacy VPC products with new advanced analytic functions, designed into an intuitive graphical user interface.
The first version of AIMES was released in 2010. AIMES endeavored to enable intelligence analysts to fuse, exploit and report on motion imagery data from a full range of sources and was designed to support the geospatial visualization and fusion of motion imagery data with other geospatial and spatial data sources. AIMES offers an open architecture that can adapt to meet the evolving needs of the FMV and geospatial intelligence communities.
