“What does Leidos do?” is a commonly asked question with a surprisingly complicated answer.

As a Fortune 500® technology company spanning a number of diverse markets, it’s hard to settle on a clear and concise elevator pitch.

What we do is broadly defined by our mission to help our customers leverage science and technology to make the world safer, healthier and more efficient.

The majority of our work is underpinned by four focus areas of technology differentiation:

  • Trusted mission AI. We help our customers adopt AI and machine learning solutions that turn data into new opportunities for insight and efficiency.
  • Full-spectrum cyber. With nearly 3,000 cybersecurity professionals at Leidos, we’re a recognized leader in cybersecurity across the federal government.
  • Digital modernization. We deliver mission-focused solutions including cloud services, enterprise IT solutions, data center modernization and more.
  • Rapid prototyping & manufacturing. From research, development, and prototyping to full-rate production for programs of national importance, discover how we are building it better.

We’re one company in many key markets, including defense, intelligence, aviation, healthcare, civil, energy, government, homeland security, life sciences, and space.

"When you examine the question of what Leidos does, what stands out to me is simply the breadth of our expertise, the complexity of the challenges we tackle and the technology we touch,” says Leidos CTO Jim Carlini. “From getting back to the moon, to keeping information safe in a cyber-vulnerable world, to equipping the U.S. and its allies for today’s great power competition, our breadth is just remarkable.”

“I also think about the major themes in what our customers are asking for,” he added. “Our customer base is so vast, and the technologies they need are so disparate, that it’s hard to include everything. Overall, they need to move quickly and with a high degree of scientific and technological innovation at scale, and because our world is increasingly interconnected, everything needs to be reliable and secured. Addressing these needs is the basis of what we do as a company.”

Leidos has roughly 48,000 employees around the world including nearly 5,000 overseas. More than half hold a secret or top-secret clearance, nearly 20% are military veterans and roughly 1,200 have doctoral degrees.

“The underlying engine of this company is our employees,” says Carlini. “Over the years within Leidos, what’s remained is a tremendous focus on the mission and solving some of the hardest problems our world is facing. Leidos is full of innovative people who are passionate about what they do, and they know how to bring new technology to hard problems.”

Leidos was recently named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere Institute for the sixth consecutive year, one of the World’s Most Admired Companies by Fortune, one of America’s Best Large Employers by Forbes and one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity by Forbes.
