Meet a Leidos Summer Intern: Nathan
Leidos summer internships have ended, but they have left lasting impacts that extend far beyond the summer. Our interns brought fresh insights and innovative solutions, helping current employees and the clients we support. Great internships can also be the start of a lifelong professional journey.
At Leidos, over 60% of interns are hired as full-time employees. Some interns, like Nathan, return for multiple internships before graduating and applying for a full-time position.
Check out what Nathan has to say about his most recent internship experience.
Where do you go to school, what are you majoring in and when do you graduate?
I attend West Virginia University where I study computer science and computer engineering.
You're a Leidos summer intern. Are you doing this in person, hybrid or virtually?
While I work in an office, a majority of the people on my team work from other offices across the country.
Tell us about your internship experience so far.
My summer internship has been great! Following my spring internship where I worked on the LEAF (Leidos Enterprise Application Foundry) team, I was asked to assist another team that was in the process of trying to secure a contract from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In the two months before the demo, I spent a lot of time immersing myself, becoming highly knowledgeable about the contract subject matter, and was able to provide significant contributions on the backend of the application, which was successfully demonstrated to the FAA in mid-July. I will continue much of the same into September, which is when the final demo and bid winner is selected.
What made you decide to apply for a Leidos internship?
Besides things like career fairs, in recent years there has been a pipeline of students who have graduated from WVU who have gone on to work for Leidos. Also considering they have an office in Morgantown where the university is and where I grew up, it was a no-brainer to apply.
How will a Leidos internship help you meet your academic and career goals?
My goal is to become a highly knowledgeable software engineer who can thrive and significantly contribute no matter the situation or team. My internship at Leidos has further developed these skills in all aspects like collaboration, self-learning, and applying concepts from university.
Besides the internship, what else are you up to this summer?
Other than my internship, I haven't done anything extraordinary, just spending my weekends relaxing and hanging out with friends and family.
At Leidos, whether you join for a summer internship or sign on as a co-op during the academic year, you will have the unique opportunity to work directly with a team on critical projects, either at a Leidos facility or on a customer site.
