Leidos Telehealth Solution Brings Remote Healthcare to Military Personnel
The Department of Defense is on a mission to modernize healthcare. As part of that mission, it is working with the Leidos Partnership for Defense Health (LPDH) to develop new health IT systems that improve outcomes for nearly 10 million service members and their families through its DOD Healthcare Management System Modernization (DHMSM) program.
Leidos, along with its four core partners and more than two dozen subcontractors, design, deliver, and deploy the MHS GENESIS electronic health records (EHR) system, connecting inpatient and outpatient medical and dental records to provide end-to-end care for military personnel.
The EHR system collates medical information for military personnel to provide a continuum of care from the point of injury to the medical center. Military personnel and their families often lack physical access to medical facilities, either because of where they were stationed or because they are deployed on active duty. They need a remote telehealth solution to support them even when a health clinic is not easily accessible.
Solution: MHS Video Connect
Leidos solved this problem by developing MHS Video Connect, a secure web-based telehealth platform providing live healthcare consultations via video for active-duty Service members and their family members. This digital service offers HIPPA- compliant, cyber-secure remote consultations over a standardized video connection to any service or family member already enrolled at a military hospital or clinic, without requiring separate registration. All they need is a webcam and microphone to participate.
"We are changing the paradigm of healthcare delivery by extending the healthcare ecosystem to support the patient at their location, avoiding the burden of unnecessary or difficult travel for the patient," explained Joshua Lordemann, Chief Engineer on the MHS Video Connect project.
