Leidos Airborne Solutions welcomes its very first Apprentice Aircraft Maintenance Engineers

This week, Leidos Australia is thrilled to welcome its first two Apprentice Aircraft Maintenance Engineers who have joined the organisation’s Airborne Solutions Australia team via its inaugural Apprenticeship Program.

The two apprentices will be located at Leidos’ Cairns base for the duration of their four-year apprenticeship, at the end of which one should emerge with a Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Avionics) and the other with a Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Mechanical), with both obtaining the necessary skills to become Aircraft Maintenance Engineers with their chosen specialty.

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer specializing in Avionics has a focus on the electronics and electrical control, instrumentation and communications systems of an aircraft, while the Mechanical specialty has a focus on the maintenance of engines, hydraulics and complex airframe and landing gear systems.

Leidos Australia has a focus on the development of its people, and wherever possible, looks for opportunities to take on new team members to train on the job. Having already established a Pilot Cadet Program to train new pilots, this Engineering Apprenticeship Program is a step towards developing the next generation of skilled Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, to not only benefit its own operations, but the Australian aviation industry.

Leidos’ Vice President Airborne Solutions Australia James Woodhams said “we are committed to building skills in the industry, and our hope is to bring on more apprentices in time.

“These apprentices will receive hands-on training from our team of highly experienced and qualified Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, as they work towards obtaining a Certificate IV in Aeroskills.”

To facilitate the Engineering Apprenticeship Program, Leidos engaged Smart Apprenticeship Solutions, a registered, not-for-profit charity that provides training and education opportunities focusing on young people and young people living with a disability. Smart Apprenticeship Solutions has helped more than 20,000 apprentices and trainees into their chosen careers over the past 35 years.
