Implementing the World’s Largest Electronic Health Record System
MHS GENESIS, the military’s new single, integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, is a Leidos success story eight years in the making. DOD awarded the Leidos Partnership for Defense Health (LPDH) a $4.3 billion contract to modernize its legacy healthcare system. The LPDH consists of industry leaders, including Oracle Health, Accenture, Henry Schein One, and dozens of supporting businesses.
As lead systems integrator, Leidos provided leadership and daily oversight of programmatic functions as well as the program’s overall architecture and deployment strategy. This included virtual and in-person deployment training as well as critical cybersecurity expertise to ensure that the MHS GENESIS EHR system meets the requirements necessary to protect critical DOD information.
Customer Benefits
For DOD, maintaining a healthy, ready force is paramount to mission success. With MHS GENESIS, each service member and their family members receive an integrated health record that follows them throughout their lives and helps support their health decisions and healthy lifestyles. Now the world’s largest, single modern EHR system, MHS GENESIS is fully deployed to the DOD’s more than 9.5 million beneficiaries and 205,000 medical providers. The system helps improve care outcomes by seamlessly exchanging health information, for example:
- Clinicians no longer toggle between multiple systems – patient records are available in a single, common federal EHR.
- Patients spend less time repeating health history to providers, undergoing duplicative tests, or managing printed health records.
- Providers have access to patient data such as service treatment records, service medals and honors, housing status, and other information to ensure patients receive earned benefits when they transition to civilian life in a smooth, timely fashion.
- A seamless care experience for patients, regardless of whether they receive care from the DOD, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Coast Guard, or another health care system participating in the joint health information exchange.
- Patients and providers are now able to make more informed care decisions.
In DOD’s mission to create a more patient-centered healthcare delivery system, the LPDH, and the Defense Healthcare Agency are now working to deliver new digital health information technologies to enable whole-person care. Leidos and its partners are committed to enabling the DOD’s ultimate mission: a healthy, ready force.
