Ameren Illinois helps schools earn an A+ in energy efficiency

As student populations increase and costs continue to rise, school districts across central and southern Illinois are learning the benefits of prioritizing their investment in energy efficiency. Districts that make smart energy choices can help remedy air quality issues, improve comfort and health conditions, support better student learning, and provide significant reductions in school energy bills.

Schools offer unique opportunities for energy efficiency improvements. With the variety of spaces in schools, projects can include heating and cooling equipment upgrades, gymnasium lighting retrofits, food service equipment replacement, efficient classroom lighting with sensors or scheduling, air leak sealing, and technology improvements. By incorporating a combination of behavioral and operational measures, schools enjoy noticeable savings. In fact, according to the Department of Energy, a typical school can reduce energy usage and costs by an average of 25%.

The Ameren Illinois Energy Efficiency Program, implemented by Leidos, is helping school districts identify energy-saving opportunities and crafting plans to achieve their energy management goals. Ameren Illinois addresses the challenges of limited staff and tight budgets by providing project support and financial incentives. Program energy advisors know where to look to uncover energy savings and assist in connecting the schools to contractors and other program partners to complete the work. Many school districts also find value in assistance with Strategic Energy Management (SEM) – a comprehensive approach to aligning energy efficiency with goals to achieve long-term benefits. In addition to providing support and instilling confidence in ongoing energy management, Ameren Illinois offers financial incentives to offset project expenses, ultimately reducing long-term energy costs.
