Transportation
Engineering and research in support of next generation transportation
A new era of mobility requires specialized expertise to address paradigm shifts in how we travel and move goods. See how we help government agencies in areas like freight efficiency and connected and automated vehicles through transportation safety, operations, and system management.
Human Factors Research
Our human factors scientists investigate how all roadway users are affected by practices and advances in transportation. Leidos research applies what we know about people to better design the environments in which they function. This work informs interactions with emerging connected and automated vehicle technologies to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
Analysis, Modeling and Simulation
We create virtual worlds in which experts can evaluate new approaches to operating our transportation system. Using advanced visualization methods, our researchers focus on ways to resolve freeway bottlenecks, analyze travel time reliability, develop guidance for traffic simulation and improve the modeling and simulation techniques vital to the introduction of connected and automated vehicles.
Transportation Safety
Our safety professionals work with passion and expertise to help federal, state, and local agencies achieve their vision of zero deaths on our nation’s roadways. Analyses, evaluations, guidance, plans, knowledge transfer and outreach activities help deliver solutions our customers champion to move people and goods safely.
Transportation Operations
We leverage extensive engineering expertise and agency experience to help customers operate transportation systems at peak performance. Our support to federal, state, and local agencies advances strategies that help manage congestion, improve reliability, maximize the efficient movement of freight and enhance the mobility of travelers with disabilities.
Leveraging our core capabilities
Our customers take on tough challenges, and at times need help from specialists in their fields. We call our specializations Technical Core Capabilities, or TCCs. For each TCC, we have developed proven, repeatable processes that help us deliver agile, cost-effective solutions.
Learn about our capabilitiesTransportation Asset Management
We facilitate the accessibility of critical data so that state transportation agencies can manage the valuable assets that make up our transportation system. Our work makes relevant, objective, and credible information readily available to drive solid investment decisions based on available resources, current system conditions, maintenance activity and accurate estimates of future maintenance needs.
e-Construction & Accelerated Construction
Our technical experts operate on the forefront of innovation in the construction of new roads and transportation facilities. We work with the federal government’s advanced e-Construction contract management practices, which speed project progress by taking paper documents out of the way wherever possible.
Freight
Whether a project is freight or mode-specific or is designed to integrate practices or technologies into the larger mobility mix, we help transportation agencies implement solutions that move goods safely and efficiently to support a thriving economy.
Research Facility Management
We operate some of the most advanced transportation lab facilities in the United States. Our team built and continues to manage the Federal Highway Administration’s Saxton Transportation Operations Lab, conducting state-of-the-art research using a connected vehicle fleet, connected infrastructure and simulation and analysis tools.
